Munich Hospital 2025 — steel structures in an operational healthcare environment

The extension of an existing hospital facility in Munich presented one of the most operationally constrained steel erection environments in our recent portfolio. The project required the assembly of structural steelwork for a new wing directly adjacent to operational clinical departments — meaning that crane operations, material deliveries and working hours were subject to strict controls to protect patient safety and avoid disruption to medical services.

COME WORKS developed a detailed method statement and logistics plan before mobilisation, identifying all potential interfaces with the hospital’s operations. Lifting zones were agreed with hospital management, delivery windows were fixed to avoid clinical shift changes, and the erection sequence was designed to minimise the duration of any crane oversail over existing buildings. The structure was erected without a single hospital operations disruption.

Healthcare construction — a zero-incident environment by definition

Working on or adjacent to a functioning hospital is a category of its own in construction risk management. Noise, vibration, dust and crane movements all have the potential to affect patient wellbeing and clinical procedures. The general contractor’s requirements for this project went significantly beyond standard site safety — and our method of working rose to meet them.

The Munich hospital project is a reference that demonstrates something that a standard industrial project cannot: the ability of the COME WORKS team to plan, communicate and execute in an environment where the consequences of error extend beyond the construction site. We are proud to have completed this project without incident.

„A hospital extension is not just a construction project. It is a construction project where the people most affected cannot leave.“
